The Suzhou International Travel Healthcare Center, Explained

Suzhou's foreigner visa medical exam is not done at a hospital. It happens at the Suzhou International Travel Healthcare Center (苏州国际旅行卫生保健中心) — the Suzhou arm of the Jiangsu ITHC network and a Suzhou Customs institution — at No. 738 Changjiang Road, Suzhou New District. Budget around ¥430 for the full examination or roughly ¥60 to certify an exam you already had abroad. Book a timed slot through the centre's WeChat account, arrive fasting on a weekday morning, and collect the stamped certificate in about three working days.

What the Suzhou centre is — and what it is not

Every Chinese city with a meaningful foreign population has an International Travel Healthcare Center: a customs-affiliated clinic handling entry–exit health matters rather than a hospital department. Its core job is the Foreigner Physical Examination Record (体检表) required before the Exit and Entry Bureau will issue a work or study residence permit, plus travel vaccinations and international health certificates. Suzhou's administrative wrinkle is worth stating plainly, because it confuses people arriving from Shanghai: the centre is provincial, not municipal. It sits inside the Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Center structure under Suzhou Customs, so official documents, university handbooks and signage all use slightly different names for the same building — "Suzhou International Travel Healthcare Centre", "the Suzhou branch of the Jiangsu ITHC", and, in older student handbooks, "the Suzhou Public Health and Quarantine Bureau". They are one address.

The location matters for planning. Suzhou New District is on the west side of the city — the opposite side from Suzhou Industrial Park, where most international employers, international schools and expatriate housing sit. Crossing the city at rush hour can take 45 minutes or more, and the exam window closes at 11:00, so build in the travel time rather than assuming a taxi will save you.

The fee, and why you will see three different numbers

Suzhou university guidance quotes different figures depending on when it was written, which is the single most common source of confusion here. Published numbers have included roughly ¥381 in one university's arrival handbook, about ¥518 for the full set in another's international-student guidance, and ¥430 in general listings for the standard examination. These are not contradictions so much as snapshots — the fee schedule is revised, and some quoted totals bundle optional items such as vaccinations or extra serology.

Plan on ~¥430 and carry ¥600. Payment is taken at the desk in cash or by WeChat Pay, so set up mobile payment before you go if you can. If you are certifying an exam completed abroad rather than sitting a new one, the published fee has been roughly ¥60 — a tenth of the cost, which is the strongest argument for bringing your home-country paperwork.

Booking: the WeChat account is the only practical route

There is no English web portal and no phone booking for foreigners in practice. The working route is the centre's WeChat official account:

• Search 苏州国际旅行卫生保健中心 in WeChat and follow the account.
• Tap the English entry in the bottom menu, then continue through the consent page.
• Choose Physical Examination Reservation for foreigners.
• Pick a date — slots have opened roughly five days ahead, no further.
• Pick a timed window; each shows its remaining capacity, and the early windows fill first.
• Fill in your details, submit, and screenshot the confirmation. A text confirmation also goes to your Chinese mobile.

Two practical consequences of the five-day booking horizon: you cannot book from abroad before you land, and a fully-booked week is a real risk in September and February, when the student intakes arrive at once. If your 30-day residence-permit clock is tight, open the booking page on your first day in Suzhou, not your first free day.

Exam day: what to bring, and what happens

• Passport — the original, plus a photocopy of the information page.
• Photos — two passport-sized colour photos on a white background.
• Payment — cash or WeChat Pay; budget ~¥430.
• Fasting — nothing to eat before the blood draw and abdominal ultrasound. Water is fine.
• Category extras — admission letter and JW201/JW202 form (students); work-permit notification letter (workers).
• Delivery address — in Chinese characters, if you want the report posted.

The panel is the national standard used at every ITHC: internal medicine, ENT and dental checks, ECG, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound, and blood tests covering at least HIV, syphilis and hepatitis markers. You move station to station and most people are through in under an hour. Nothing here is a diagnosis — it is a fitness-for-residence screen with a pass/fail character, and it is read by an immigration officer, not by your doctor.

Suzhou is one of the cities that reliably accepts conversion. If you completed a Foreigner Physical Examination Record before leaving — stamped by the examining institution, photo affixed, and accompanied by the original laboratory reports for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis plus the X-ray, ECG and ultrasound records — the centre can verify and certify it instead of repeating the exam, at the roughly ¥60 certification fee.

The failure mode is partial paperwork: a form with no lab printouts attached, or a chest X-ray reported but not supplied. Missing items are simply examined on the spot at the individual item rate, so a partial file still saves money — bring everything you have rather than deciding in advance that it will not qualify.

Make the fasting morning count

The ITHC exam tells you almost nothing about your health. It confirms you are fit for a residence permit and stops there — no lipids, no diabetes screen, no cancer markers, no cardiac assessment beyond a resting ECG. Since you are already fasting in a city 25 minutes from Shanghai by rail, many new arrivals pair the compliance exam with a real comprehensive checkup in Suzhou in the same week, where Grade IIIA screens start near ¥1,100 and Industrial Park clinics report in English as a matter of course.

Note also that if your employer is arranging a hire screen, the pre-employment 入职体检 is a third, separate exam — different building, different form, different fee. Whatever you book, ask for results in English so the findings are usable when you get home.
