The Guangzhou International Travel Healthcare Center, Explained

The Guangzhou International Travel Healthcare Center (广州国际旅行卫生保健中心) is the designated venue for the foreigner visa medical exam in Guangzhou — the screening required when a work (Z) visa becomes a residence permit. It operates from two sites: the long-standing clinic at 207 Longkou West Road, Tianhe, and a service point in the Poly Building, Zhujiang New Town. Budget about ¥600 for the entry health check — not the ¥1,700 age-tiered schedule, which is the US immigrant-visa panel fee for the same institution — book via WeChat, arrive fasting, and expect the stamped certificate within a few working days.

What the Guangzhou ITHC does

Like every major Chinese city, Guangzhou has an International Travel Healthcare Center — a customs-affiliated clinic dedicated to entry-exit health matters rather than everyday care. For foreigners its core service is the Foreigner Physical Examination Record (体检表), the fixed screening the exit-entry authorities require for a residence permit — typically within 30 days of arrival on a Z visa. The center wears a second hat that matters for queue-planning: it is also a designated panel facility for emigration medicals — including exams tied to the US Consulate General in Guangzhou and streams for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. The two sites

The two locations are a few metro stops apart in eastern-central Guangzhou. Your booking confirmation states which site to attend — double-check it, because turning up at the wrong one costs you the fasting morning.

Fees and booking

The residence-permit entry health check in Guangzhou is a flat fee, not an age-banded one, and it sits in the same few-hundred-yuan band as every other mainland centre — Beijing's ¥430, Shenzhen's ~¥480, Shanghai's ≈¥500–600 (see the Shanghai ITHC guide). As 2026 planning figures:

⚠️ If you have been quoted ¥1,700, ¥1,500 or ¥700, you are being priced for the wrong exam. That three-tier schedule is the US immigrant-visa panel fee the State Department publishes for the Zhujiang New Town site — a different exam, for a different government, roughly three times the price. The two run under one institution's name and people book across them. Ask specifically for the entry health check (入境体检) and confirm which exam a quoted figure covers before you pay.

The verification route is the one most people miss. If you had a full medical abroad within the last six months at a public hospital, you do not have to repeat it — bring the stamped Foreigner Physical Examination Record (filled in Chinese or English only; other languages are refused), plus the original X-ray, ECG, laboratory and ultrasound reports, and the centre issues a Certificate of Verification instead. A private-clinic report has to be notarised locally first. Missing items are simply examined on the spot.

Booking is through the center's WeChat channel — search 广州国际旅行卫生保健中心 or scan the QR code on the official site, gzwbzx.com. Morning fasting slots go first; employers' HR teams routinely book for new hires, and the fee schedule shown in the booking flow is the authoritative one.

Exam day: what to bring and what happens

• Passport — original plus photocopies of the photo page and your visa/entry page.
• Photos — recent passport-size (2-inch) bareheaded photos; two to three is the safe number.
• Fasting — nothing from the night before except water.
• Clothing — easy to change, no metal, for the chest X-ray and ultrasound.

The panel is the national standard: height, weight, and blood pressure, an internal-medicine check, chest X-ray, ECG, abdominal ultrasound, and blood tests including HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B (HBsAg). You move station to station with a barcode sheet — the staff process foreigners daily, and the circuit typically takes about an hour. The stamped health certificate is usually ready within a few working days; collect it with your ID and receipt, confirm the validity window against your permit filing date, and photograph every page.

The other exam in the same building: the US immigrant-visa medical

This is the part of the Guangzhou center that confuses people, because it is a completely separate exam that happens at the same institution — and it explains why there are two sites at all. The Guangzhou ITHC is one of only four facilities in mainland China whose medical exams the US Consulate General will accept from immigrant-visa applicants. The other three are the Beijing ITHC, the Shanghai International Travel Medical Center, and the IME Centre at Fuzhou University Affiliated Provincial Hospital in Fujian — note that Shenzhen is not among them. Exams performed by any other physician are not accepted, however well-credentialed — this is a fixed list, not a quality judgement.

The address the State Department publishes for Guangzhou is 4F–5F, East Tower, Poly Building, No. 59 Huali Road, Zhujiang New Town (tel 020 8121 9500) — the second row of the table above. That is not a coincidence of real estate: the US Consulate General is at 43 Hua Jiu Road, a few minutes away in the same district, with its entrance on Huaxia Road near Exit B1 of Zhujiang New Town metro station (Lines 3 and 5). The Tianhe site on Longkou West Road handles the residence-permit exams; the CBD site sits next to the consulate that reads the results.

The two exams are not interchangeable. The immigrant-visa medical is required of every applicant regardless of age, and covers a medical-history review, a physical exam, a chest X-ray, blood tests for applicants 15 and over, gonorrhoea testing for applicants aged 18–24 (or otherwise as indicated), and tuberculosis testing for everyone aged two and over — plus the CDC's vaccination requirements, which are far broader than anything the residence-permit panel asks for. A China residence-permit certificate will not substitute for it, and it will not substitute for a residence-permit certificate.

And the fee is where the confusion starts. The schedule below is the one the US Department of State publishes for its Guangzhou panel physicians — it belongs to this exam and to this site, not to the residence-permit check on Longkou West Road:

Set that against ≈¥600 for the residence-permit exam a few metro stops away — close to a three-fold gap between two exams sharing one institution's name, which is exactly why relocation guides, HR teams and this centre's own listings so often quote the wrong one. Bring your interview appointment letter, passport, recent passport-size colour photographs, a copy of your immunisation records, and your DS-260 confirmation page.

The clock most people get wrong. If you are handed a sealed envelope, do not open it — it goes to the interview unopened; under the newer e-medical process there is no envelope at all and results are transmitted directly. If X-rays are issued to you, hand-carry them to the US port of entry and never put them in checked luggage. And the scheduling trap: an immigrant visa's expiry is normally set by the expiry of the medical report, not the other way round. Doing the exam months early does not buy you time — it spends it. Book it against your interview date.

Make the fasting morning count

The ITHC exam is a compliance screen — it says nothing about your cardiac risk, cancer markers, or anything a doctor at home could act on. Since you're already fasting in a city with some of southern China's strongest hospitals, many new arrivals pair it with a genuine comprehensive checkup in Guangzhou the same week — at Guangdong-value prices well below Shanghai or Beijing (see the national cost guide).
