The Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center, Explained

The Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (上海国际旅行卫生保健中心) is where foreigners in Shanghai complete the mandatory visa medical exam for a work or long-term residence permit. The exam site is at 15 Jinbang Road, Changning District, intake runs weekday mornings (about 8:00–11:00), booking is via the center's WeChat account about two weeks ahead, the health check costs ≈¥500–600 (or ¥70–500 to verify an overseas report instead), and the stamped certificate is ready in about three to four working days.

What the Shanghai ITHC is — and who has to go

Every major Chinese city has an International Travel Healthcare Center, a customs-affiliated clinic network that exists for entry-exit health checks rather than everyday medicine. Shanghai's is the designated venue for the Foreigner Physical Examination Record — the fixed screening required when you convert a work (Z) visa into a residence permit, and for many long-term study and family stays. The center also handles the outbound side — exam panels for emigration and vaccination certificates (including yellow-fever) for travel out of China — which is why you'll see both foreigners and Chinese nationals in the queue.

Location, hours, and booking

Changning is west of central Shanghai; the site is a short taxi from Loushanguan Road or Zhongshan Park metro stations. Mornings are the working window because the exam is done fasting — arrive early, clear the paperwork desk, and you'll move through the stations faster.

Two sites, and your booking picks one: Jinbang Road or 2090 Jinqiao Road

The Shanghai ITHC examines at two addresses on opposite sides of the river, and a confirmation that says only “上海国际旅行卫生保健中心” does not tell you which one. That ambiguity is the most common way a Shanghai visa medical goes wrong — not a missing document, but a fasting traveller standing outside the wrong building at 08:00 with an hour’s journey still ahead. Check the site on your booking and write it down.

The afternoon slot is the real reason to care, and it comes with a trap. Changning’s foreigner intake is a morning window; the Pudong branch publishes a scheduled 13:00–15:00 session as well. If you cannot lose a working morning, that is a genuine advantage. It does not mean you can eat. The blood draw is the fasting station wherever you sit it, so a 13:00 appointment means fasting through breakfast and lunch — which most people find harder than an early start, not easier. Take water, take the appointment card, and eat afterwards.

Two practical consequences people discover too late. First, your certificate follows your exam: collect it from the site where you were examined, or arrange courier delivery at the desk on the day rather than travelling back across the river three to four working days later. Second, if you are here for the US immigrant-visa panel exam, this choice is probably not yours to make — that is a separate, differently-priced examination run under consular rules, and the arrangements described in the panel-exam section below are the Changning ones. Confirm the site when you book the panel exam; do not assume the branch that suits your calendar also runs it.

If you are choosing between cities rather than sites — because your employer will accept the exam done anywhere in China — the Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen centres run the same national panel on their own schedules.

What it costs

The entry health check is a flat fee, not an age-banded one, and it is far cheaper than most relocation guides suggest. Shanghai universities briefing their own incoming staff and students quote it consistently (see the national picture in the visa-medical guide):

The verification route is the one most people miss. If you had a full medical abroad within the last six months, you do not have to repeat it — bring the original report, the lab results and the chest X-ray film, and the centre will issue a Certificate of Verification instead, for as little as ¥70. If anything is missing from the overseas report you will be asked to top it up, so the saving is not guaranteed.

⚠️ If you have been quoted ¥1,400–2,100, you are being priced for the wrong exam. That age-banded schedule belongs to the US immigrant-visa panel exam, which runs at the same address and is roughly three times the price. What the exam actually tests

The panel is the national one, not a Shanghai one — the same set of stations appears on the bilingual Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (外国人体格检查记录) wherever in China you sit it. Knowing the list in advance is the difference between a 90-minute morning and a wasted trip, because two of the stations have preparation attached and one of them is the reason the whole thing is done fasting.

What is in the blood work — and what happens to the result

The laboratory minimum that a Chinese health centre will insist on seeing — including when it is verifying an exam you had done abroad rather than repeating it — is HIV antibody and syphilis serology. In practice the panel run in China is wider than that minimum and normally also covers hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis C antibody, liver function (ALT) and a routine blood count. Exactly which extras appear varies by centre and by year, which is why the two named above are the ones worth planning around. If a result comes back outside range, the centre does not fail you on the spot — it asks for a re-examination, billed separately, which is the line you will have seen in the fee table above. That is an administrative loop, not a diagnosis, and a re-test request is far more often a borderline liver enzyme than anything else. One thing worth being clear about: this is a screen for fitness to reside, not a health checkup. It is a narrow, fixed list aimed almost entirely at communicable disease, and a clean certificate tells you very little about your actual health. If you want the panel that does — tumour markers, a full lipid and metabolic profile, imaging chosen for you rather than for the form — that is a different appointment at a different kind of institution, and Shanghai’s hospital checkup packages start around $250.

The other exam at this address — and why US visa applicants come here specifically

The Jinbang Road centre runs two different exams for two different governments, and people book the wrong one. Alongside the entry health check described above, the Shanghai International Travel Medical Center is one of only four facilities in the whole of mainland China whose medical exams the US Consulate General in Guangzhou — which processes immigrant visas for the entire country — will accept. The other three are the Beijing ITHC, the Guangzhou ITHC, and the IME Centre at Fuzhou University Affiliated Provincial Hospital. An exam by any other physician, at any other hospital, however senior, is simply not accepted. It is an accreditation list, not a quality ranking.

Shanghai is the one city where the two exams are hardest to tell apart, and the fee schedule is why. In Beijing they run at separate addresses; here they share a site, so the only thing distinguishing them at the counter is what you ask for. The panel exam is priced by age band — this is the schedule the US Department of State publishes for its panel physicians, current as of its February 2026 post supplement:

Set that against ≈¥500–600 for the residence-permit exam at the same address — roughly a three-fold gap between two exams sharing one institution's name. The distinctive 18–24 tier is itself the giveaway: it exists because the US panel adds gonorrhoea screening for that age group, which is a US immigration requirement rather than a Chinese one. So when you are quoted a figure at Jinbang Road, confirm which of the two exams it is for before you pay — if you are there for a work permit, ask specifically for the entry health check (入境体检).

Two things follow that are specific to doing this in Shanghai. Your interview is in Guangzhou regardless — the panel exam can be sat here, but the consular appointment is not in Shanghai, so the real decision is whether to do the medical at home before you fly or fold it into the interview trip. And do not book it early: an immigrant visa's expiry is normally set by the expiry of the medical report, so an exam done months ahead does not buy you time, it spends the window you have to actually move. Book it against the interview date.

Whichever city you choose, you will be handed a sealed envelope — do not open it, and hand-carry any X-ray films to the port of entry rather than packing them. Documents and exam-day checklist

• Passport — original plus photocopies of the photo page, your visa or visa-free entry page, and any info-update pages.
• Photos — three recent 2-inch (passport-size) bareheaded photos.
• Two printed forms — this is the step people miss. Once the booking is confirmed, open My Appointments in the same WeChat account you booked through: the two-page Health Examination Application Form is generated there and the Consent Form is a separate download. Both have to be printed and filled in before you arrive. There is no public printer at 15 Jinbang Road and no way to complete them on a phone, so a correctly booked slot can still be lost to a missing sheet of A4. Do this the evening before, not on the morning.
• Fasting — the centre asks for at least five hours with no food; water is fine. A morning slot after an ordinary night's sleep clears this comfortably.
• An overseas report, if you have one — if the medical was done within the last six months at a hospital designated by the Chinese embassy or consulate in that country, bring the original report, the laboratory results and the chest X-ray film, and ask about verification rather than re-examination. A report from a hospital outside that designation is not automatically accepted.
• Practicalities — wear easy-to-change clothing without metal for the chest X-ray; bring your booking confirmation; payment at the cashier (bring a card that works in China or mobile pay).

The circuit itself is assembly-line efficient: registration, then station to station — height/weight and blood pressure, physician check, bloods, chest X-ray, ECG, abdominal ultrasound — typically done within about an hour once you start. Staff at the foreigner windows handle the process daily and the forms are bilingual, but the experience is procedural rather than consultative.

Which extra documents you need depends on why you are here

Almost every guide to this centre — including, until now, this one — writes the checklist for someone arriving on a work permit or a student visa. The city lists four categories, and the two that get left out are precisely the ones where nobody has an HR department to ask.

The Registration Form for Temporary Residence in that last row is the one to plan for. It is the slip you receive when you register your address at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival — a step that is separate from the medical, has its own deadline, and is easy to treat as a formality until it turns out to be a prerequisite for the exam you booked two weeks ago. If you are in Shanghai for any reason other than a job or a university place, do the police registration first and the medical second.

Collecting your certificate

Results are compiled into the stamped health certificate in about three to four working days — the city's July 2026 guidance says three, while the centre's standing notice and the universities briefing incoming students say four, so plan for four. Collection is in person at Window 2 of the Public Service Center with your original ID and exam receipt; you can instead sign up for courier delivery at the time of the exam, but changing the collection method afterwards has to be done in person. The certificate is what your employer submits with the residence-permit application, it is valid for six months, and you should photograph every page before handing it over.

If a result comes back abnormal the centre contacts you with a re-examination notice — bring your original ID and the fee invoice for that appointment, which is the one document people throw away.

While you're at it: the exam is not a checkup

The ITHC visit is a compliance screen, not an assessment of your health — it won't look at cardiac risk, cancer screening beyond a chest X-ray, or anything your home doctor can act on.
