PET-CT Tracers in China and what each does to the price

A whole-body PET-CT in China using the standard tracer, fluorine-18 FDG, costs about ¥4,100–8,100 (roughly $600–1,200) as a self-pay international patient. Every other tracer is quoted per case and costs more. The reason is that the radioactive tracer, not the scanner, is the expensive part of a PET-CT — and the specialist tracers are manufactured in the hospital’s own radiopharmacy a couple of hours before your appointment. If you are booking a screening checkup, you want FDG and nothing else. If an oncologist has named PSMA, DOTATATE or NaF on a request letter, you are doing a different exercise, and this page is about that one.

Why the tracer, not the scanner, sets the price

Every PET tracer is decaying while you travel to it, and the half-life decides the entire economics of the scan.

Fluorine-18 has a half-life of about 110 minutes. That is long enough for one cyclotron production run to be divided among many patients and driven to hospitals within a two-to-three-hour radius. The considerable cost of making it is spread thin. This is why FDG has a published price band at all.

Gallium-68 has a half-life of about 68 minutes. It cannot be shipped anywhere. It is eluted from a germanium-68 generator standing in the hospital’s own radiopharmacy, and that generator yields a limited number of elutions per day and is replaced on a fixed schedule whether or not anybody uses it. A gallium-68 scan therefore carries a share of a large fixed capital cost spread across comparatively few patients. Reported figures put the ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE tracer dose alone above ¥5,000 — more than an entire FDG scan before the scanner is switched on.

The practical consequence

Ask any quote for a specialist-tracer scan to state explicitly whether the tracer is inside the price. On a standard FDG scan the question barely matters. On a gallium-68 study the tracer can be the larger half of the bill, and a quote that omits it is not a quote.

Where China’s price advantage compresses

This is the part almost nobody budgets for correctly. China’s saving is largest where the cost is staff time and scanner time, and smallest where the cost is a globally priced consumable. A PET-CT is a mixture of both, and the mixture changes with the tracer.

FDG is manufactured domestically at scale, so an FDG PET-CT captures close to the full discount — which is why our PET-CT cost page can quote a saving in the 80% range against typical US pricing. Germanium-68 generators and the DOTATATE and PSMA precursor peptides are specialty products bought on the same world market that every other country buys from. The scanner time is still cheap; the vial is not.

So expect the headline saving to shrink on a gallium-68 study — still a real saving, but not the same one. If a quote implies an 80–90% discount on a PSMA or DOTATATE scan, that is worth a second look, because the underlying consumable does not get 80% cheaper by crossing a border. The same arithmetic applies to any procedure dominated by an imported device or drug rather than by theatre time.

⁶⁸Ga-PSMA is now a registered product, not a research scan

China’s National Medical Products Administration approved gallium-68 gozetotide — the registered name for ⁶⁸Ga-PSMA-11 — in 2025, alongside lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan, the corresponding therapy. That is a meaningful change for anyone travelling for a prostate-cancer scan.

Before it, PSMA PET in China was largely investigator-led work at a handful of academic centres, which meant fitting a research protocol and its eligibility criteria. As a registered product it is something a nuclear-medicine department can offer as ordinary care. Availability is still concentrated in large tertiary hospitals rather than spread evenly, so confirm with the specific centre before booking flights — but you are asking a scheduling question now, not an access question.

⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE is frequently two scans, not one

For neuroendocrine tumours, Chinese practice commonly uses a two-day paired protocol: ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE on one day and ¹⁸F-FDG on the other. The two tracers answer different questions about the same tumour — DOTATATE shows somatostatin-receptor expression, FDG shows metabolic aggressiveness — and read together they describe a tumour neither shows alone.

If that is what your oncologist has requested, plan accordingly: two tracer charges, two scanner sessions, two days on the ground, and a report that may only be finalised after the second. Say “paired two-day protocol” when you request the quote so the hospital prices what you are actually having.

¹⁸F-NaF for bone: the smallest premium

Sodium fluoride is made on the same cyclotron that produces FDG, with no separate generator or supply chain, which is why it is the least expensive step away from the standard scan.

Against a conventional technetium-99m MDP bone scan — still the default in many hospitals — NaF PET images sooner after injection, produces markedly better image quality, includes a low-dose CT in the same session, and detects more lesions. If someone offers you a choice between the two, the price gap is usually smaller than people assume. It is a reasonable question to ask outright rather than to accept the default.

If this is a checkup, you want FDG

Screening and staging are different activities and the tracer choice follows from which one you are doing. A specialist tracer is built to bind one receptor found on one family of tumours; it is close to blind to everything else. Used for general screening it costs more and tells you less, and it will not reassure you about the things a checkup is meant to look at.

How to get a real quote

Specialist-tracer scans are not bookable from a price list, so the request has to carry enough information for the hospital to price it. Send ahead:

Then ask for four things in writing: whether the tracer is available on your dates, whether the tracer is inside the quoted price, whether it is a paired two-day protocol, and the report language and turnaround. Availability is a booking constraint, not only a price one

Because a generator yields a fixed number of doses on a production day, centres tend to batch gallium-68 patients onto particular weekdays rather than scanning on demand. The bottleneck is the radiopharmacy’s production calendar, not the scanner’s diary, which is often reasonably open.

Book weeks ahead. Treat a specialist-tracer slot offered at short notice as worth confirming twice — occasionally it is a genuine cancellation on an existing production day, and occasionally it is a scan that will be quietly rebooked after you have landed.

Common questions

Which PET-CT tracer do I need in China?

For a screening checkup, fluorine-18 FDG, and nothing else. FDG is a glucose analogue that shows metabolic activity anywhere in the body, which is what you want when you are not looking for one specific thing. The specialist tracers are the opposite: each is designed to bind one receptor found on one family of tumours, so ordering one without a specific clinical question costs more and tells you less. How much does a PET-CT with a specialist tracer cost in China?

A standard whole-body FDG PET-CT runs roughly 4,100 to 8,100 RMB for a self-pay international patient, and published municipal schedules sit inside that band, with Zhejiang setting 5,300 RMB per scan under its price reform. Gallium-68 studies are not published as a standard band anywhere and are quoted per case, meaningfully above the FDG figure. The pattern we see most often is someone arriving convinced they need the most advanced tracer available, when the request letter in their bag says FDG. The tracer is a clinical decision that was already made by the doctor who ordered it. What is worth optimising is everything around it: the right centre, a date the radiopharmacy can actually serve, a report your own oncologist can read, and the files to go with it.

Bringing a request letter to China?
